This Winnetka home is a well-maintained two-story brick colonial with a columned entry portico, symmetrical window placement across both floors, and a roofline that has aged gracefully alongside the mature trees on the block. The home did not need paint everywhere. The red brick was in excellent condition and the white window trim was clean and consistent. What the homeowner wanted to change was the color story told by the shutters, the front door, and the accent details that frame the facade.

The existing white shutters, while crisp, read as visually flat against the warm tones of the brick. The near-black front door was a strong choice for contrast but created a heaviness at the entry that the homeowner wanted to soften. The goal was a palette update that would honor the traditional character of the home while bringing the color choices into a more current, considered place. That meant moving the shutters into a slate or navy tone that would hold its own against the brick without competing with it, and replacing the dark door with something that would draw the eye without dominating the facade.

The slate shutters provide the contrast the white ones could not against the warm brick, framing each window cleanly without pulling attention away from the architecture. The dusty blue door is the right kind of unexpected on a traditional colonial: it reads as a considered choice rather than a departure, and it works against both the brick and the white portico columns in a way that a more conventional color would not. The downspout accents carry the darker palette around the facade without requiring additional painted surfaces, tying the elevation together at the detail level.
