Mid-Project: Drywall Repair Before the Fireplace Wall Could Be Painted

This Park Ridge living room was mid-renovation when Sunpainting came in. New drywall had been installed around the fireplace feature wall as part of a broader remodel that included new floating shelves on either side of the firebox and updated flooring throughout. The wall had fresh compound patches, open seams, and the uneven absorption surface that new drywall produces before it has been properly sealed and skim coated. The brick surround and the curved hearth were staying, but they needed to be painted to integrate with the new wall finish rather than read as a separate, older element in a freshly renovated room.

Projects like this one are where the relationship between drywall work and painting becomes most visible. A wall with fresh compound patches, open drywall seams, and surface variations from the installation process cannot simply be primed and painted. The compound absorbs paint at a different rate than the surrounding drywall paper, which produces flashing: visible inconsistency in sheen across the wall surface under certain light conditions. Skim coating the entire wall surface with a thin, even layer of joint compound, sanded smooth and primed correctly, is what creates the uniform absorption base that allows paint to lay flat and consistent. That is what we did here before any paint went on.

The finished wall is exactly what a renovated living room needs as its focal point: smooth, warm, and visually unified from the ceiling down to the hearth. The skim coat produced a surface that is consistent in texture and sheen across the full width and height of the wall, including the transitions to the side walls where the floating shelves were installed by the general contractor. The brick surround and the curved hearth were painted to match the wall color, which eliminated the visual separation between the old brick and the new drywall and turned the entire fireplace wall into one resolved element rather than two materials in competition.

Painting a brick fireplace surround requires a different approach than painting drywall. Brick is porous and alkaline, and standard latex paint applied without appropriate preparation will not adhere correctly or consistently over time. We used a masonry primer before the topcoat, worked the paint thoroughly into the mortar lines, and applied the coverage needed to produce a uniform white surface across both the brick face and the mortar joints. The arched firebox opening and the curved profile of the hearth require brush work rather than roller application to get into the recessed areas and the transitions between the brick faces. The finished surround looks clean and intentional rather than slapped over.
